Engaging the Senses: Exploring the Role of Nature in our Lives

Join us for the first installment of Engaging the Senses, taught by B.Willow owner and founder, Liz Vayda. Scheduled after the shop is closed, this event will be a multi-sensorial experience, which will leave you feeling revived, relaxed and inspired. Engaging the Senses will be lecture/discussion/meditation-based, centered around the theme of incorporating more natural elements into one’s live, as a means for stress reduction specifically, but for general physical and mental health benefits as well.

There’s legitimate data out there that links time spent breathing in phytoncides (a substance emitted by plants & trees and generally means the aroma of the forest) produces more killer white blood cells in the brain. So, walking in the forest doesn’t just feel good, it’s literally healing us in the process. We will explore several examples of the healing power of nature, in a way that will profoundly alter your understanding of the “more than human world” that we’re each part of.

Learn how to mount a tropical of your choice on repurposed treated wood from Oak Hill Sawmill. We'll have a variety of low-light and bright-light tropicals to choose from. Whichever plant you choose will be suited to stay on the board for a few years before needing to be replanted. We will be using treated wood that is able to sustain continual watering.  Each participant will receive a board pre-drilled with screws that is ready for mounting your tropical plant.

Celebrate and bottle up some summertime magic by creating your own cordial in this hands on workshop. Cordials are a delicious, seasonal, and versatile way to incorporate herbal goodness into your everyday life. They can be sipped neat, added to cakes, pies, syrups and other desserts, added to marinades and glazes, and of course, used in delicious herbal cocktails and digestifs!

Instruction, herbs, and fruit needed to make your summertime cordial will be provided- just bring a 16 ounce wide mouth jar and a spirit of your choosing (750ml or enough to fill your jar). For your spirit, I recommend either brandy or vodka, but gin, whiskey, tequila, and port can also be delicious!
