Cocktails & Conservation Social Hour Feat. Baltimore Whiskey Co!

Join us for our second social hour at the shop! Whether you already have a passion for environmental awareness or you want to learn more, this will be a chance to meet new people, chat about the natural world, and enjoy two free cocktails crafted by the Baltimore Whiskey Company!

We will also be joined by Jared Margulies, a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Sheffield in environmental politics. Jared will be giving a short presentation about the flowering plant Lantana camara, a beautiful yet devastating invasive species transforming ecosystems worldwide. In the US, Lantana is grown for its attractive and sweet-smelling multicolored flowers. It might even be in your backyard! But tracing a journey from South America to European botanical gardens to the administrative headquarters of the British Raj, uncovering Lantana's social history reveals the impacts of a colonial legacy decimating tropical forests worldwide. At the same time, can this story of a very destructive flower suggest ways we might learn to 'love our invasives' for conservation's benefit? This brief talk will be followed by a screening of a short film about Lantana's impact on the forests of South India, some of the most important landscapes for elephant and tiger conservation in the world.

Be sure to bring some spare cash, as we will also be collecting donations for The Shola Trust, an Indian conservation non-profit working to control Lantana and market its economic use with the support of local communities.

For the Greater Goods Market

A market to benefit a local cause and promote small businesses & artists. Occurs three times a year: spring, fall + winter! This is the 6th Greater Goods! The last market had over 50 vendors, ranging from naturally dyed textiles to rum cakes.

We are now accepting applications for vendors! Click here for application info.

Grab some lunch at R. House and swing into the garage for a day of great local shopping. This market will also feature the The Intercultural Counseling Connection- a local nonprofit that provides culturally responsive therapeutic services for asylum seekers, asylees, and refugees in the greater Baltimore area. Access to trauma-informed mental health care can help them cope with the effects of pre-migration experiences as well as the challenges of cultural adjustment. Their network of dedicated clinicians includes native speakers of Nepali, Spanish, French, Tigrinya and Farsi. Counseling services provided through the Connection are provided at no cost to clients.

We began the Greater Goods market in December of 2015. As a small business, we know how helpful markets and pop-ups can be to introduce your wares to the public and engage directly with your customers. We hope to see you there!

Eclipse Day: Space Club Movie Screening

Happy eclipse day! In honor of this 100 year event, join us for our first Space Club meeting. We will be screening Picture of Light, courtesy of our new neighors, Beyond Video.

BYOB, we'll provide the popcorn! Movie will start at 8:30 and last until about 10pm.

Picture of Light is a mesmerizing tale about a filmmaker's journey to Canada's arctic in search of one of Earth's greatest natural wonder: the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights. While combining glimpses of the characters who live in this remote environment with the film crew's comic and absurd attempts to deal with the extreme cold, the film reveals the paradoxes involved in trying to capture the spectacular light show of the Northern Lights on celluloid.

Exploring the tension between nature and technology and between science and myth, Peter Mettler's documentary reflects on our desire to capture the wonders of the world on camera, revealing how our increasingly connected world threatens to render obsolete our individual and authentic experiences.

Also, please bring any spare cash to donate to their soon-to-be-open video shop on Howard Street (near Otto bar)!
